Creating a Website

My name is Manasseh Franklin and I'm on my way to creating my first website. As a senior Professional Writing major at Kutztown University in Kutztown, PA, I'm preparing myself to step into the writing world at the end of May. This website is just one of the few stepping stones left along the way.

My brother has a talent for artistic stucco and renovation work on houses, which he has learned from my Dad over the past 12 or so years. They worked together under my Dad's business and now Gabe is starting his own business, called Gabriel Franklin Design. I thought this website would be a nice way for him to start his business off strong.

That's a good start, Manasseh.

What are some of your career goals?

Where would you like to apply your writing skills?

Career goals, oh the looming question. I have a few things in mind, but I'm open to where life takes me and what it brings. For the moment, I'd like to write for travel and food magazines such as Saveur, Food & Wine, or National Geographic Adventure, but also possibly write for alternative publications like AdBusters or Utne Reader. I'd like to do some traveling, and find ways to get it paid for (as in the case of travel writing). Eventually my goal is to live in the Rocky Mountains somewhere, right now Durango Colorado is stuck in my mind (I lived there briefly before). My long term career goal is to be a college professor in journalism, magazine or possibly creative writing. But it'll be a little while before I get there.

Have you always wanted to teach?

I've always wanted to write. Plus, I'm a natural teacher, so my career has been filled with writing and the teaching of writing.

I suggest finding the magazine that you like most and attempting to write an article that would fit into that pub. Then you'll know whether or not you want to do that for a living.

You should also being having conversations with these publishing companies to learn about their needs and expecations.
